The Gorilla (1927)

“The Gorilla” is a 1927 film directed by Alfred Santell. The movie is based on the play of the same name by Ralph Spence. The plot revolves around the mysterious murder of Cyrus Townsend. Suspicion falls on Arthur Marsden, who is Townsend’s secretary and Alice’s sweetheart. However, specific plot details remain unclear due to the film’s lost status. The film premiered in Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio, as well as St. Louis, Missouri, on November 5, 1927. Although the 1927 version was considered a lost film, it was later restored and reissued in 2024. Additionally, the play “The Gorilla” was adapted into sound films in 1930 and 1939, both titled “The Gorilla.”
